 ASD Name Change

Town Hall Meeting

Monday 12th September

10am - 12pm

on Zoom

The ASD was formed in 2009 by a small group of Sound Designers, to create an inclusive, productive space where the widely dispersed sound community could connect. The aims of education and community have held true over the decade of the Association’s existence.

Along the way, the Sound Designers who formed the ASD and subsequent Board members have been joined by other Sound Professionals - Front of House Engineers, Radio Mic Runners, Production Sound Engineers, Warehouse Staff, Composers, Educators, Recordists (to name a few) - and then our Future Professionals. All of these people have joined our community for the same reasons, to feel connected to others, to learn, to share and to socialise.

With our entire membership in mind, a question has arisen about whether ‘The Association of Sound Designers’ is the best banner to represent us. To change our name is a serious undertaking, not one that we could implement lightly, or without the support of the members. We want to ensure that we present ourselves as the inclusive and supportive environment that we strive to be, and don’t want any sound practitioner to feel unwelcome in our community. Structurally, nothing about the Association would change, only the name and logo.

In the first instance, we would like to ask if a name change is something that you feel is a positive step for us?

To do this, we'll run a town hall meeting on 12th September between 10am - 12 noon, to discuss this idea in person. If you are unable to make this date, you can mail any contributions you'd like to be read out in the meeting to admin@associationofsounddesigners.com. We will circulate minutes to the membership following the meeting.

Then we will move to a vote to gauge initial opinion in the following week. The vote will be open from 19th - 23rd September.

Once we've established whether it’s an avenue you'd like to pursue, then we will begin working towards a decision as to a name.

We hope this feels like a positive opportunity to discuss the direction of our association together, and we're looking forward to seeing you.

Very best wishes

Melanie, Vicki, Peter, Sam, Rosie and Lewis
